Transcript of “The Call”

You know this would be like a Saturday afternoon. Friday afternoon, we have services. Saturday morning, we have services. Then we have lunch. And then, we have something called the Rebbe’s Tisch, which means the Rabbi’s Table. And usually the Rabbi tells stories and teaches and then he goes for that wonderful convention or she goes for that wonderful convention called the Rebbe’s nap on Saturday afternoon, a very important part of Shapas. Probably the only day of the week that the Rabbi takes a nap.

So the other day, I was watching a YouTube of Swami Satchidananda and he was with my mentor, Rabbi Joseph Gilberman of blessed memory. And I was struck by the poignancy of their discussion. I really was digging, so to speak, the give and take of these two elderly gentlemen who had a lifetime between them. And that came from other parts of the world. I think at that time they were in Virginia at Yogaville telling stories to a group of students.

So the question was “How did we become friends and how did we start this interfaith movement?” And, by the time this video was made, Rebbe had to be in his eighties and Satchidananda was probably equally as old. And each one had such a singular purpose, a singular set of background. One from India and the other from Hungary. Each possessed a very finite footprint of very unique gifts and talents and purposes.

It became clear as I listened to these two elderly statesmen talking to each other, became very clear what they were trying to teach. Each one had an angel, whispering in their ear “Grow! Glow! Radiate!” And actually according to Talmud, according to Torah, that’s true of each of us.

Can you hear your angel? Have you discovered what your unique talents, your gifts, your purposes are. The world needs you, just as it needed Swami and Rebbe. Will you please step forward? Now is the time.
